Exterior paint

Today we got a quote on having Pemberley's exterior painted. The trim is horrendous. The paint is chipping off badly and is past due for some paint. Once the weather warms up, we are going to have her painted at long last.

So, once again, I turn to you, blog readers. Here is my house:

And this is what I want her to become:

Isn't that magical?!

But, here is where I need some input. I love the red front door on my inspiration house. I have wanted a red door forever.

Because red doors are so welcoming.

However, lately I have been charmed by yellow doors like these:

Especially this soft, buttery yellow. It just melts in your mouth, don't you think?

What is your vote? Red door or yellow?

Also, the inspiration home doesn't have shutters, but Pemberley does. So, what do I do with those puppies? What color would match with that lovely blue suede color? The only idea I have is either a navy blue or black, similar to this:

Would those colors all work together? I'm trying to imagine that house above with a slightly darker blue and a red/yellow door. I think it works... Does it work?!

And does anybody want to hold my hand while I select the right blue paint for the house? I have to buy 30 gallons. I don't normally stress out about paint colors because if you hate it, you buy a different color and redo it. But, buying thirty gallons of the wrong color scares the living shizzballs out of me. That's a lot of clams. Whoooooooo. Deep breaths, Mary.

Anyone have an opinion? If Pemberley was your house, what color would you paint her?

I LOVE dark blue houses, I'm trying to convince DH to agree for when we someday build again since we have tan vinyl now. I think I would go with shutters in a navy, a few shades darker than the main house color. If the front of your house gets much sun, go with a yellow door. The red will turn a blechy pink if it gets a lot of exposure unless you repaint it frequently - it happened to my Mom's house and it wasn't pretty.

I love a red door. Seriously love it! And I think darker blue shutters would be nice.

Welllllll, if she were my house, she'd be lavender - lol! But, since I'm the only nut job that loves having a lavender house, I say the top photo is my favorite combination.

There is a house in our neighborhood that is blue with a yellow door and I like it in the spring and summer and even the Fall, but I think at christmas it loses some pizzaz.

As for shutters, we were told when we re-did Lavender Hill a few years back, to leave ours off, because they are "no longer in fashion." If that's a no for you, then I like the Navy.

I adore the house "1703" except with the buttery yellow door. I'd probably do the shutters and all trim in white. Pemberly could have peeling rusty orange paint and be gorgeous though! (but YELLOW door for sure!)

dark blue house
white shutters
yellow door

I vote for dark blue shutters with a yellow door. I love the yellow door. I also think you should copy the landscaping in the first house!!

SO lovely - I'd check the "heritage" lines of paint for your blue! I agree with the red door for sure, and the dark shutters - navy or black!

Darker blue house lighter blue shutters and a red door = a beautifull Pemberley. My DS is a contract painter and so says he and me LOL.

I agree with the first commenter about the sun and a red door. I would prefer you go with a red door, but must admit the sun can be brutal and you may have to paint it every year to keep it a true red color.

My vote is for:
dark blue house
white or dark blue shutters
white trim
red door

My MIL & FIL redid their house last year. They went with dark blue and the shutter are just a shade or two darker. It looks fabulous. Before that, I had never saw a dark blue house. Their front door is red, but I really like the unexpected yellow myself.

I love the yellow door, and LOVE that dark blue house color. I'd probably either go for white shutters, or a lighter blue or grey shutter color.

Dark blue house, black shutters, red door.

LOVE that first house. Dark blue, white trim, red door...oh and the landscaping doesn't hurt either. I want to live there...seriously.

Go with the yellow door!! So unexpected. I'm thinking when you're picking the perfect shade of blue for the house, lean towards the more gray tones. I like the idea of darker shutters and white trim. Lucky! Dark shutters on my house will melt away. I have to stick with white... boring.

LOVE the colors you have chosen. We had our old farm house painted 2 years ago and it was the best thing we ever did. It was nasty, old white paint. Amazing what a fresh coat of paint will do!! If you want, you can see more pics of the dark blue color that we chose. It was Benjamin Moore paint...I want to say it was called "Vermont Slate"...or something like that. I can find out for sure...here is the link to the post I did about it! Good luck...!

Blue house
Black shutters (LOVE black shutters)
Red door

I'm jealous - my house is a pinkish-beige. Blue is so much better.

Love the dark navy with the yellow door! I know the trim will be white but some gray accents might be pretty too.

Maureen  – (March 2, 2012 7:07 AM)

definitely the red door with dark grey shutters

if it was my house I reckon I would probably go for light grey walls, shutters in white and oak door with oak venetian blinds in the windows and some greenery either side of the door.

make sure you test a HUGE swatch area on the actual outside of the house. The color I picked for our house was a warm dark gray, and what I got was a midtone blue grey. bah! Seriously though, test it before you commit. And go warmer then you think because there is way more blue sky reflecting then you can imagine.

Blue with navy shutters and a red door! We had a high-gloss red door (and I mean RED!) in our first house. Our house faced west and that door got hammered with sun from noon until sunset. During the summer that meant almost 9 hours. We lived there 7 years and it never needed painting. It still looked great.

I love the first one with the red door.

I love the first inspiration picture and agree that your home would look great without the shutters. BUT, I think to be successful you'd need to be sure the mullions in your existing windows be bright white along with the window surrounds/trim. Right now, from your photo, they look the same color as the existing shutters....

As for that lovely buttery yellow door... I agree that its cheeriness is QUITE appealing... but keep in mind that it has a medium grey as it's popping point, not blue... I don't know that the pale yellow, with the blue from the first house, would read the way you're envisioning.

The red is fun and, depending on the particular hue of dark blue you choose. If it's got green undertones, you COULD pull off a goldenrod kinda color on your door! But if it's more of a true blue/mildly purple undertoned blue, a true red hue (or even a leaning toward raspberry tones) would be really sharp.

Sure love the overall idea! Hope it goes smoothly and that you grin with joy every time you approach your home!
